Calculate Times Face Value
“Times face” means how many dollars you would pay for each $1.00 of face value. For example, 22x face means $1.00 in silver dimes, quarters, or halves would be valued at about $22.

Silver Content Reference
These commonly used industry constants estimate circulated silver content per $1.00 face value. Actual melt value can vary slightly by wear, condition, and market demand.
| Coin Type | Years | Composition | Silver Oz Per $1 Face |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roosevelt Dimes, Washington Quarters, Kennedy/Franklin/Walking Liberty Halves | 1964 and earlier | 90% silver | 0.715 troy oz |
| Kennedy Half Dollars | 1965–1970 | 40% silver | 0.295 troy oz |
What Counts as Junk Silver?
Junk silver usually refers to common-date U.S. silver coins valued mostly for their silver content rather than rare-date collector premiums. The term does not mean the coins are worthless. It means the primary pricing anchor is silver melt value.
Pre-1965 Silver
Most U.S. dimes, quarters, and half dollars dated 1964 or earlier contain 90% silver.
Kennedy Halves
Kennedy half dollars dated 1965 through 1970 contain 40% silver.
Market Spread
Retail buy and sell prices often trade above melt depending on demand, availability, and dealer spread.
