Gold melt value is useful, but it is only the starting point. Many U.S. gold coins trade based on type, grade, survival rate, mintmark, originality, and collector demand.
Classic U.S. Gold
Pre-1933 gold often carries a premium above melt, especially for scarce dates, branch mint coins, high-grade examples, and coins with original surfaces.
Eagles & Buffalos
American Gold Eagles and Gold Buffalos are usually priced closer to gold spot plus premium, but fractional Eagles can carry stronger retail premiums.
Small Gold
$1 gold, $2.50 quarter eagles, and $3 Princess gold pieces are type-coin markets. Do not treat scarce small gold as generic bullion.

Hunter’s Tip: Type 2 Gold Dollar
The Type 2 Gold Dollar, struck from 1854 to 1856, is one of the more interesting small U.S. gold types. Many examples show weak details due to striking issues, and high-grade coins can be scarce.
The 1855-D Gold Dollar is the key date of the Type 2 series, with a reported mintage of only 1,811 pieces.
